Wrist Pain: Causes & Treatment Options

Ganglion cysts

Ganglion cysts are benign, no cancerous, and harmless lumps that commonly affect the hand, especially the back of the wrist. The exact cause of ganglion cysts is unknown. However, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, they are more likely to affect

  • Gymnasts (because of the repeated stress to their wrists)
  • Individuals ages 15 to 40 years
  • Individuals assigned female at birth

Ganglion cysts are usually harmless. However, if they exert pressure on a joint or nerve, they can cause severe pain in the wrist area. Treatment for ganglion cysts usually depends on the severity. In some cases, the pain may go away on its own, or your doctor may recommend wearing a splint or draining it.
