Ways to prevent vertigo, dizziness, or lightheadedness

There are steps you may do to reduce your risk of experiencing dizziness, vertigo, or lightheadedness, even though you might not always be able to prevent these symptoms.

  • Stay hydrated: Maintain your fluid intake to avoid experiencing dizziness or lightheadedness, which can both be symptoms of dehydration. This is especially true if you’re:
    • ill with vomiting or diarrhea
    • in a warm or hot area working out
    • pushing yourself physically
  • Maintain a healthy level of stress: These symptoms can be brought on by feelings of worry or anxiety, so try to find strategies to lessen your stress. Deep breathing exercises, yoga, and meditation are some good alternatives.
  • Eat regularly: Eating regularly and getting enough nutrition can help reduce dizziness and lightheadedness.
  • Avoid specific substances: If you frequently experience dizziness or lightheadedness, avoid using coffee, alcohol, or nicotine as these substances may exacerbate your symptoms.
  • Get enough sleep: You run a higher chance of feeling lightheaded or dizzy if you don’t get enough sleep.
  • Use assistive devices: To avoid falling, it’s a good idea to use a walking stick or build rails or grab bars in your home if you frequently have dizziness, vertigo, or lightheadedness.
  • Avoid specific motions: If you frequently get vertigo, try to stay away from movements like turning your head fast, bending down to pick up items, getting out of a sitting or lying down position too quickly, or extending your neck to reach for something on a shelf.
  • Manage your medications: If you frequently feel dizzy, lightheaded, or vertigo from the medications you take, talk to your doctor. It may be possible for you to switch drugs or reduce your dosage.
