Treatment

Brain atrophy cannot be permanently reversed after it has occurred. However, preventing brain damage, especially by preventing a stroke, may decrease the amount of atrophy that you experience over time. Some researchers recommend that healthy lifestyle strategies could reduce the atrophy that’s normally associated with aging.
Drugs
Your doctor will prescribe drugs to prevent strokes and atrophy. Some of these medications include:
- Blood thinners [5]
- Cholesterol-lowering agents
- Antihypertensive medications [6]
These drugs are not for everyone, but they can be beneficial if you have certain risk factors. Drugs used to treat Alzheimer’s disease, such as Aricept (donepezil) and Namenda (memantine), may reduce atrophy, but the effect is believed to be small, if observed
