Other Tests to Diagnose Dementia

Dementia cannot be diagnosed by a single test. During the diagnostic process, healthcare experts may also carry out a number of additional medical tests. These are listed below.
Medical History
A primary care physician will conduct their examination, starting with a series of inquiries regarding a patient’s medical history, including mental history and the history of any behavioral or cognitive abnormalities.
They will also inquire about any family members’ health issues and whether the person has any relatives who have dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
Blood Test
In order to rule out further causes of symptoms, such as hormonal imbalance and vitamin insufficiency, a doctor will also schedule blood tests. These often consist of:
- a complete blood count
- testing for thyroid, renal, and liver function
- folate and vitamin B12 levels
- checking hemoglobin A1C for diabetes
