How Is Epilepsy Diagnosed?

Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT)

This procedure is used when other procedures like MRI are yet to diagnose epilepsy. This procedure allows blood flow to various regions of the brain to be viewed during a seizure. It involves injecting a radioactive material into the vein, which then shows the details about the flow of blood in the brain. The regions of the brain in which the blood flow is above the normal range shows where the seizure might have happened.

The test is taken in two parts. The first part of the test known as ictal is taken during the seizure. The second part of the test is known as interictal and it is taken after the seizure. The results of both tests are then compared to each other and used for diagnosis.
