Causes of Tonic-clonic Seizures

Generally, seizures are caused as a result of unusual electrical activities in the human brain. It can also be caused by a series of health conditions such as ruptured blood vessels in the brain region, brain tumors, and others.

Some other causes of grand Mal seizure include:

      • Infection from a head injury
      • Low sodium level
      • Abuse of drugs
      • Withdrawal from drug use
      • Low levels of glucose, calcium, sodium, or magnesium

However, there are situations in which doctors are unable to determine the main cause of the seizures.

Other factors that can increase your risk for having seizure including grand Mal [3] include;

      • Specific neurological disorders or genetic conditions.
      • History of seizure with fever
      • Stroke [4]
      • Misuse of drug or alcohol

Triggers for seizures can also include;

      • Fever
      • Menstrual cycle
      • Loud music
      • Sleep deprivation or tiredness
      • Heavy drinking
      • Irregular meals that can lead to low blood sugar level
      • Some medicines like antipsychotic and antidepressant medication.
