Top 8 Signs & Symptoms of Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is brain damage in the cerebellum that alters movement and posture. It occurs as a fetus or during the first few years of infancy and is often caused by the lack of certain nutrients necessary for growth during the early stage of life. [1]

Cerebral palsy may also lead to other health conditions, including visual or hearing impairments. While there is no cure for this condition, it can be effectively managed with adequate medical attention. Regular visits to the doctor may significantly improve symptoms and help the child grow to maximize his or her full potential. Here are some signs and symptoms associated with cerebral palsy. [2]

Paralysis

A common sign of cerebral palsy is paralysis in some areas of the body. It affects specific muscles in the body and varies from person to person. For example, it may lead to quadriplegia, which is the partial or total loss of control and feeling in the four limbs. It may also affect facial muscles. [3]

Paraplegia is the paralysis in the lower half of the body, leading to loss of muscle control in the legs and pelvis. It may cause mobility and reproduction problems in patients. Diplegia is another possible impairment with cerebral palsy which affects the four limbs in the legs only, with the exclusion of the arms.

Patients may also experience hemiplegia, which is paralysis on one side of the body, affecting the leg, arm, and facial muscles.
