What Is Meningitis Type B?

Treatment and Outlook for Meningitis B

Meningitis B is a serious health condition that needs to be treated in a hospital. The first step of treatment is an injection of broad-spectrum antibiotics. Your doctor may also administer fluids intravenously.

The symptoms you are experiencing may also contribute to the treatment approach. If you are having difficulty breathing, your health care provider may administer oxygen. If needed, your doctor may recommend that everyone you have been in close contact with be given oral antibiotics as a precautionary measure.

Even though most people who develop this disease tend to survive without long-lasting side effects, meningitis B is also considered a fatal disease. Even with treatment, some people can still die from it. The sooner you get treated the better your chances of surviving and recovering.

About 19 percent of people who have meningococcal disease, experience permanent side effects and disabilities, such as brain damage, tinnitus [5], limbs amputation, scar on the skin, deafness and loss of kidney function.
