Causes of sensory issues in children

It is not certain what causes sensory problems in children, but researchers believe that it may have something to do with how the brain’s sensory pathways organize and process information. People with autism frequently struggle with sensory processing.
Additionally, it is unclear whether sensory problems can develop on their own or they are brought on by another disorder. Some medical experts and doctors think sensory processing disorders are more of a symptom than a true diagnosis.
According to a 2020 review and a tiny 2017 study, sensory processing disorder may be linked to pregnancy or birth problems, which can include:
- low birth weight
- premature birth
- parental stress
- alcohol or drug consumption during pregnancy
Overexposure to some chemicals and lack of stimulation to the sensory organs may also be risk factors for developing sensory processing disorder.
Possible abnormal brain activity could change how the brain responds to senses and stimuli.
