Chronic Bronchitis Fact Sheet

What Causes Chronic Bronchitis?

The repeated and continual irritation and inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes results in chronic bronchitis. The initial swelling and irritation that results in acute bronchitis is usually triggered by infections. With chronic bronchitis, however, the common cause is by smoking cigarettes. Over 90 percent of those [1] affected by this disease have a smoking history.

Some other causes include being exposed to polluted air for a long period of time, toxic gases and chemical or industrial fumes. Also, a history of repeated lung infections can also cause more damage to the lungs, which could make the symptoms of chronic bronchitis worse.

When Should You See a Doctor?

It is very important that you do not handle symptoms of chronic bronchitis lightly, by believing that you have a smoker’s cough. With even the slightest suspicion of this disease, it is advisable to see a doctor immediately. Without receiving treatments for chronic bronchitis on time, your chances of severe lung damage are increased, and this can result in heart failure or respiratory issues.

How Chronic Bronchitis Is Diagnosed?

If you’re not sure if your symptoms are truly those of chronic bronchitis, certain tests are available to assist your doctor in making a definitive diagnosis; they include:

  1. A chest x-ray
  2. A pulmonary function test [2]
  3. A CT scan
  4. Taking a test, to analyze the sputum and check for the presence of bacteria in it. When you cough, sputum is that mucus that comes from your lungs.
