Common Treatments for Hip Bursitis

Ice Compress

Placing ice on the affected area can numb it, reducing the tenderness and improving swelling or inflammation. [5] Use an ice pack or pack of frozen foods over the side of your hip. To ensure that it’s not too cold, you can wrap it in a thin towel before placing it on the swollen area. Cold compress is an effective way to reduce inflammation and pain. Combining it with other treatment exercises helps speed up recovery from trochanteric bursitis.

After performing any physical therapy like stretching, you can use a cold compress to control swelling by decreasing blood flow to the area. For better results, apply ice to the spot within two days or forty-eight hours after symptoms occur.

Warm Compress

After a few days of cold compression, you can switch to warm compress by placing a heating pad or hot water bottle on your thigh. For this self-care routine to be effective, it is advisable to use ice or heat on the affected area while resting. Dry or moist heat is effective enough to alleviate symptoms of this condition. [6] To ensure that the heat is not too much to be burned, you can wrap the heating pad or water bottle in a soft towel before placing it.
