Signs And Symptoms of Multiple Myeloma

Nerve Damage (from Spinal Cord Compression)

Spinal nerves branch out the foramina (spaces between the bones of the vertebral column) at several junctions along the spine. These nerves control a wide range of functions in the body.

People with advanced stages of multiple myeloma that affect their spine may suffer from compression fractures. This is the collapse of several bones on the spine that typically results in the compression of the spinal cord. [11] This condition can stifle the space available to spinal nerves and damage or interfere with their ability to function well. The resulting damage to the spinal nerves can cause paralysis or loss of bladder or bowel control. [12]

Nerve damage caused by multiple myeloma may also cause a condition known as peripheral neuropathy. [13] This condition is characterized by numbness, weakness, pain, and a sensation known as “pins and needles.” It is often worsened by hot or cold temperatures.
