Signs And Symptoms of Multiple Myeloma

Bone Fracture

Multiple myeloma targets the cells in the bone marrow and cortical bone. As the disease progresses and cancerous cells multiply, the damage done to the bone worsens. The bones become less dense and more brittle. These weakened bones are more likely to break than the bones of healthy people.

People with multiple myeloma are more likely to have hard-to-explain bone fractures. Myeloma that affects the spine can cause the vertebrae there to collapse. [10] When this happens, it is termed as compression fracture. In severe cases of multiple myeloma, people may become shorter by a few inches owing to the compression of their vertebrae.
