Common Signs of Ulcerative Colitis

Loss of Weight and Bloody Stool

Losing weight is a common manifestation of Crohn’s inflammatory bowel disease and ulcerative colitis. Weight loss is a sign of malnutrition induced by the fact that you are not getting sufficient calories to meet your body requirements. There are several reasons why this may happen, such as poor appetite. If you lose weight due to ulcerative colitis, try eating five or six small snacks and meals throughout the day rather than two or three large course meals every day. Poor appetite often due to nausea and the urge to vomit. This may keep you from eating and essentially leave your body deficient in necessary needs. At the same time, the absorption of nutrient by the bowel may be affected) especially the absorption of iron).

Diarrhea [7] with blood or pus in it is one of the most common signs of colitis. You may notice this blood or pus in the toilet after you are done easing yourself. However, it is also not uncommon for the blood [8] to not be visibly seen despite its presence in your stool. The inflammatory process leads to diarrhea, which often makes your colon empty itself frequently. As the cells lining the inside of your colon die and come out, open sores (ulcers) start to form (which also lead to pain). These ulcers can cause mucus, pus, and bleeding. The pus production and bleeding of your colon wall are what causes the bloody stool in colitis. This internal bleeding from the ulcerative effect on the colon wall usually leads to the washing away of iron from the body as it is lost in the blood. This can cause iron deficiency [9].
