Common Symptoms of Colitis

Nausea, Vomitting  and Dehydration

Nausea is an unpleasant sensation that frequently occurs before vomiting. Vomiting refers to the process where the stomach involuntarily empty its contents through the mouth (also referred to as throwing up.) It is very common for people with colitis to experience episodes of nausea and vomiting [7]. This is what is usually responsible for malnutrition as it is associated with loss of appetite.

Dehydration occurs when the body uses or loses more liquid than ingested. When this happens, the body may have difficulties to perform its normal functions. If you do not replace the fluids that are used or lost, dehydration occurs. Diarrhea is often the cause of dehydration in individuals with colitis as they often pass frequent stool. Without the replacement of fluid lost in diarrhea, one can get dehydrated.
