Causes of Colon Polyps
Colon polyps is as a result of mutation of the genes when they ought to grow and divide in an orderly way. This mutation cause cells to continue dividing even when new cells aren’t needed. In the colon and rectum, this unregulated growth can cause polyps to form and develop anywhere in your large intestines.
Not all colon polyps are issues and they may disappear on their own while some can develop to cause colon cancer. Basically, there are two main categories of polyps which are the nonneoplastic and the neoplastic. The nonneoplastic is of three types which include hyperplastic polyps, inflammatory polyps, and hamartomatous polyps. This category of polyps co don become cancerous.
The neoplastic polyps are the ones that have the potential of growing into a cancer if not treated quickly. Most of the colon polyps are called adenomas. Serrated polyps may also become cancerous, depending on their size and location in the colon. The larger a polyp, the greater the risk of cancer.
