Risk Factors of Colon Polyps

Certain factors increase the risk of getting colon polyp, such as:
- Having inflammatory intestinal conditions
- Family history
- Obesity, lack of exercise and fat intake
- Smoking [6]
- Excess alcohol
- Race
People also inherit genetic mutation that cause colon polyps to form. If you have any of these genetic mutations you are at a higher risk of developing colon cancer. Example of hereditary disorders that can cause colon polyps include:
- Lynch syndrome
- Gardner’s syndrome
- MUTYH-associated polyposis (MAP)
- Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP)
- Serrated polyposis syndrome
- Peutz-Jeghers syndrome
