Risk Factors of Colon Polyps

Certain factors increase the risk of getting colon polyp, such as:

  • Having inflammatory intestinal conditions
  • Family history
  • Obesity, lack of exercise and fat intake

  • Race

People also inherit genetic mutation that cause colon polyps to form. If you have any of these genetic mutations you are at a higher risk of developing colon cancer. Example of hereditary disorders that can cause colon polyps include:

  • Lynch syndrome
  • Gardner’s syndrome
  • MUTYH-associated polyposis (MAP)
  • Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP)
  • Serrated polyposis syndrome
  • Peutz-Jeghers syndrome
