Laxatives are medications used to help induce bowel movements or loosen up the stool for easy passage (stool softeners). [2] Although these drugs are used in the treatment of constipation, excessive use of them may worsen the condition. Abuse may lead to electrolyte disorders, caused by dehydration and mineral deficiencies. It may cause long-term damage to the digestive system, such as nerve or muscle damage in the colon, and chronic constipation.

Antidepressants are used to improve moods and for the treatment and management of depression. They are also used to manage anxiety disorders, chronic pain, and addiction. A common side effect of antidepressant drugs is constipation. They alter the regular functioning of the digestive tract, which may cause constipation. Other symptoms associated with taking antidepressants include dizziness, dry mouth, and headaches.
