IBS Constipation (IBS-C): Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Treatment of IBS-C

Treatment for IBS-C focuses on reducing your symptoms and improving your overall quality of life. Even though there is no known cure for IBS-C, certain prescribed treatments can be used to help feel less bloating and pain, along with improved bowel movement and consistency. It is important that you are under your doctor’s supervision on any methods of treatment you choose. This is because there are health risks that come with taking some laxatives and supplements.

Here are some common treatment strategies to discuss with your doctor.

Change in Diet

Symptoms of IBS-C can be managed by changing what you eat. For example, fiber reduces constipation [3] by softening stool, making it easier to pass. And experts recommend that women eat 25 grams of fiber daily and men take in 38 grams of fiber daily. Good sources of fiber include whole grain bread and cereals, fruit, vegetables, and beans.

It would also help if you can stay away from coffee, carbonated drinks, and alcohol. These supplements can slow down your stools. Same goes for processed foods such as chips, cookies, and rice. Your doctor may prescribe a FODMAP diet. [4] This diet basically gets you to cut down on carbohydrates that are hard for your body to digest.

You may also be advised to keep a symptom journal. This would help you figure out which food your body can handle and which triggers symptoms.
