Exercise

Exercise is essential in regulating blood glucose levels. Patients are advised to get at least 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity every day. You can walk, swim, bike, skip, or do any other activities that gets your heart rate up. These physical activities are coupled with strength training activities such as yoga and weightlifting. Patients that use medications that reduce blood sugar will need to take a snap before working out. Exercise is one way of losing excess weight; having a personal trainer is very important. Other exercises that help are; aerobic exercise and resistance exercise.

Metformin (Fortamet, Glumetza, and Others)

This is mainly the first drug prescribed by doctors for type 2 diabetes. It helps to decrease certain activities in the liver (glucose production) and regulating the body’s sensitivity to insulin so that the body utilizes it correctly. Some people have B-12 deficiency and may need to take supplements. Side effects of this drug that get better over time are; nausea, abdominal pain [1], indigestion [2], and diarrhea [3].
