The severity, signs, and length of diabetes burnout not only vary between people, but also within the same individual. One episode of burnout may be different from another, depending on what is going on in your life.

There are psychological symptoms that may help recognize diabetes burnout, such as:

  • If you are feeling like diabetes controls your life
  • Experiencing negative emotions related to diabetes, such as anger, frustration, resentment, overwhelm, and hopelessness
  • Lack of motivation to follow treatment plan
  • A sense of failure or defeat
  • Feeling like no one understands what you are going through
  • A pessimistic outlook

Changes in how you manage the condition may also be a sign of diabetes burnout. Changes that may indicate you have the condition Include:

  • Forgetting to take your diabetes medication as prescribed
  • Reducing how often you check your blood sugar or not checking it at all
  • Skipping doctor’s appointment

You may also experience physical symptoms of diabetes burnout. These symptoms are due to stress, they include sleep changes, body aches and pains, and more frequent bouts of illness.
