Diabetes – Symptoms, Types, Treatment and More

Types of Diabetes

  • Type 1 diabetes: this type results from lack of production of insulin in the body because the cells in the pancreas are destroyed. It is also known as juvenile diabetes. This particular disease is mostly diagnosed during childhood. There is no known cure for this disease, but it can be managed by lifestyle changes, administration of insulin either through insulin pumps or injections. Complications may arise from this disease, such as ketoacidosis [3], stroke [4], kidney problems and many other problems.
  • Type 2 diabetes: this is the most common type of diabetes. Obesity [5] stands as a major cause of this illness. In this case, insulin is not produced effectively or the body does not make good use of the available hormone. Following a proper diet, regular exercises and medications are able to manage this health condition.
  • Gestational diabetes: this occurs due to insulin blocking hormones which are developed during pregnancy. Overweight individuals going into pregnancy are at high risk of this condition. If left untreated, it can lead to stillbirth or premature birth. Women are advised to avoid sugary foods, alcoholic beverages, fast foods and so on.
