Risk factors for diabetic gastroparesis

Women diagnosed with diabetes have a high risk of developing gastroparesis. Other diseases can increase the risk of having the disorder, including previous abdominal surgeries or a history of eating complications.
Diseases and sicknesses other than diabetes that can cause diabetic gastroparesis are:
- Having type 1 diabetes
- Having a coexisting autoimmune disease
- Having a history of certain gastric surgeries
- Having type 2 diabetes for longer than 10 years
Other conditions that are responsible for gastroparesis symptoms are:
- Parkinson’s disease [6]
- Chronic pancreatitis
- Cystic fibrosis
- Kidney disease
- Turner syndrome
Gastroparesis is more common in women than men and in people that have had surgery around the esophagus, stomach, or small intestine because surgery can affect the vagus nerve. In some cases, no known cause is found, even after thorough testing.
People that have had certain cancer treatments, such as radiation therapy around the chest or stomach area also have higher chances of developing gastroparesis.
