Why Does Diabetes Cause Fatigue

Bad Mental and Emotional Health

Diabetes can have an impact on the mental and emotional health of people living with diabetes.

According to research, diabetic patients may be two to three times more likely to be diagnosed with depression than people who do not have this disease. Diabetic patients can also experience anxiety due to their health concerns.

Depression and anxiety can cause fatigue due irregular sleep patterns.

Some symptoms of depression that are related to fatigue include;

  • Irregular sleep cycles
  • Inability to fall asleep or waking up too early
  • Extreme loss of energy

Obesity

Obesity can cause fatigue in diabetic patients. The majority of people living with diabetes, especially those type 2 diabetes, are overweight.

Some reasons why being overweight can cause fatigue include;

  • Lifestyle choices: Some lifestyle choices, such as lack of exercise, a diet that includes a high amount of processed food, can lead to fatigue and can also cause excessive weight gain.
  • Complications in an obese person, for example, sleep apnea, [5] can lead to an abnormal sleep pattern.
  • Increased amount of energy used in moving the extra weight of an obese person.
