Causes and Factors of Diverticulosis

Obesity

Obesity is a risk factor for a lot of digestive diseases including gallstone disease, cancers of the colon, pancreas, and esophagus, cirrhosis, and diverticulosis. An analysis of the health professionals follow-up study’s first 6 years [3], found a link between the Body mass index (BMI) and diverticulosis. To check for obesity, you calculate your Body Mass Index [4]. This calculation is done using your weight and height.

Obesity is a result of consuming more calories than is being burned through exercise and daily activities. A person is obese when the body mass index is 30 or greater. An increase in the subcutaneous fat and abdominal visceral also causes diverticulosis. An obese person, therefore, has a very high risk of getting diverticulosis.
