Home Care

In order to help your child feel better while they wait for the AOM infection to clear up, your doctor may advise using the home remedies listed below:
- Massage the infected ear with a warm, wet towel.
- pain treatment with over-the-counter (OTC) ear drops
- Take over-the-counter painkillers such acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
Medication
In addition to conventional painkillers, your doctor might advise eardrops. If your symptoms don’t go away after a few days of home treatment, your doctor might prescribe antibiotics.
Surgery
If your child’s illness doesn’t go away after medication or if they consistently get ear infections, your doctor might advise surgery. For AOM, surgery possibilities include:
- Aural tubes: A surgical procedure to place small tubes in your child’s ears may be recommended by your doctor. The tubes let the middle ear’s fluid and air escape.
- Adenoids removal: If your child’s adenoids are huge or inflamed and they frequently get ear infections, your doctor may advise having them surgically removed.
