Outlook

AOM infections often resolve without any consequences, but recurrence is possible. Additionally, a brief temporary hearing loss in your child is possible. However, following treatment, your child’s hearing should quickly improve. AOM infections can occasionally result in:
- continual ear infections
- oversized adenoids [3]
- increased tonsils
- a blown eardrum
- cholesteatomas, [4] which are middle ear growths, delays in speech development in kids with recurrent otitis media
Mastoiditis, [5] an infection of the skull’s mastoid bone, and meningitis, an infection of the brain, can both happen in extremely rare circumstances.
