Swimming with Eczema: What You Should Know

Does PH level cause skin dryness?

In most cases, healthy pool water is slightly alkaline, with a pH level of 7.2-7.8. The normal PH range is acidic with a PH of 4.1-4.5.

Studies show that the skin has a barrier, called the acid mantle [1]. This barrier helps the skin moisturize, maintains the quantity of essential lipids, and prevents the passage of foreign materials, such as toxins, pollution, and bacteria.

When the skin’s PH becomes highly alkaline, it becomes drier and more difficult to stay moisturized. It also makes the skin more sensitive and susceptible to eczema. In most cases, an alkaline skin level occurs in people who swim frequently in a pool or ocean water. For this reason, it is advisable to avoid spending more time in a swimming pool to prevent eczema and other skin conditions.
