Bunions: Symptoms, Causes and Treatments

What Is Bunion?

A bunion on the foot is a bony protrusion or a “bone that is more protracted than normal” that can cause pain more often when walking or when wearing inappropriate shoes. [1] It is a deformity that most frequently affects the first finger or “big toe”, as we will see later.

The bunion is the most common pathology that affects adults’ feet, with 30% of the population having some degree of deformity. It is 10 times more common in females than in males. [2] In women, the use of high-heeled shoes and “pointy toes”, contributes as an important extrinsic (external) factor in the worsening of the deformity and in complaints of pain.

Bunions appear, in most cases, in the second decade of life and can be unilateral (affect only the left or right foot). The bilateral bunion, that is, which affects both feet, is more common than the unilateral bunion.

Bunions have little to do with professional activity and have no prevalence for right-handed or left-handed people.
