What Are the Main Causes and Risk Factors of Gout?

High Purine Intake

Diet high in purine is a cause of gout. An increase in purine intake means an increase in the production of Urate as a result of purine breakdown and this can result in an accumulation of Urate in the blood resulting in gout over time. Examples of foods that contain high levels of purine are; Red meat, organ meat like kidneys and liver, beans, mushrooms, asparagus, cauliflower, oily fish like sardines and anchovies, etc.

No Obvious Cause

In some cases, the exact cause of high uric acid levels may not be known. A combination of hereditary, hormonal, therapy factors may be difficult to determine when they are the cause of increased uric acid levels in the blood.
