Atrial Fibrillation – Causes and Risk Factors

Lifestyle Factors

Some lifestyle factors are also linked with atrial fibrillation. They can increase or reduce your risk of atrial fibrillation.

  • Studies show that people who drink alcohol regularly are more likely to develop atrial fibrillation. Even moderate quantities of alcohol can cause atrial fibrillation in some people.
  • Illegal drugs like cocaine and other street drugs, can cause atrial fibrillation or make it worse.
  • Physical activities such as participating in endurance sports or physically working hard can also increase your risk of developing atrial fibrillation. Moderate physical activity can also have a protective effect that can reduce your risk of atrial fibrillation, and other heart conditions.
  • Smoking is known to make you more susceptible to atrial fibrillation. The risk of developing this condition is higher in people who smoke for a long period. Exposure to secondhand smoke, including in the womb can also increase the risk of atrial fibrillation, according to many studies. The risk appears to be higher the longer you smoke and decreases if you quit. Exposure to secondhand smoke, even in the womb, can increase a child’s risk of developing atrial fibrillation.
  • Stressful situations, panic disorders, and other forms of emotional stress may also increase your chances of developing atrial fibrillation.
