Effective Treatments for Angina

Medication

Lifestyle changes alone cannot help treat angina. Several medications [5] can be used to treat angina. Those frequently recommended are discussed here:

Nitrates

Your doctor may recommend nitrates. These medications help relax and widen your blood vessels [6], increasing the flow of blood to your muscles. This may be used only when you have angina attacks or before engaging in stressful activities that may trigger your angina. It may also be used as a long-term preventive drug.

Most doctors recommend nitroglycerin tablets. These tablets are placed under the tongue.

Aspirin

Low-dose aspirin [7] can help your angina by reducing the ability of your blood to clot. This makes the blood thinner and more likely to flow through narrow or clogged blood vessels in your heart without obstruction. Aspirin also helps to manage pain from angina.

Aspirin can have serious negative side effects if overused. Consult your doctor before using it. You should not exceed the recommended dose.
