Effective Treatments for Angina

Clot-Preventing Drugs

Medications like ticagrelor or prasugrel help reduce your angina symptoms by preventing clots from forming in your blood. These drugs make your platelets less likely to clump [8] into clots. They function like aspirin and are usually given to people who cannot use aspirin.

Calcium Channel Blockers

Calcium channel blockers (sometimes called calcium antagonists) are one of the most common drugs recommended for angina pectoris. These drugs affect the muscle cells of your artery walls [9], causing your blood vessels to widen and relax. This increases blood flow to the heart and reduces angina symptoms or incidence.

Beta-Blockers

Beta-blockers slow the heart and lower your blood pressure [10] by blocking the effects of epinephrine (adrenaline), a hormone produced by the adrenal gland in response to stress. These drugs also relax your blood vessels and make blood flow to the heart easier. This helps reduce symptoms of angina.
