Incarceration
The ever-present risk of tissue trapping or incarceration is among the threats you face when you do not address a hernia. In simple terms, incarceration happens when a hernia is stuck as it penetrates through the abdominal wall (i.e., portions of the intestines or other tissue and organ of the human body as it passes through the abdominal wall or other weakened parts of the cavity). [9]
As long as a hernia can still be easily moved (i.e., pushed back in and out of the abdomen), recovery strategies remain relatively straightforward. However, recovery choices become more difficult when the hernia reaches a relatively larger size. At this point, the hernia will usually cause pain and probably nausea. While incarceration is typically not life-threatening, it is a red flag that may at any time suggest advancement to tissue strangulation.
Although most hernias are resolved only by manipulating the hernia to the abdominal cavity, in some cases, this is not possible and may result in complications. One of the main complications is the strangulation of an organ in the abdominal region, most of the time in the intestine, with decreased blood circulation to the site, which may result in necrosis.
This condition is serious and should be treated with surgery as soon as possible due to the risk of lack of blood circulation to the organs, causing inflammation, perforation, infection, and death of the cells, i.e., necrosis.
