IBS vs. Celiac Disease: What You Need to Know

What are the causes of IBS or celiac disease?

The causes of IBS and celiac disease are also similar. However, there are some obvious differences between the underlying causes of the conditions. The similar causes of irritable bowel syndrome and celiac diseases are:

  • Genetics
  • Digestive tract infections
  • Emotional stress
  • Food intolerances
  • Gut bacteria overgrowth

These conditions are triggered by different factors. Just like you can tell the differences between their symptoms, you can also do the same for what triggers them.

According to studies, celiac disease is primarily triggered by an immune response to gluten. Gluten is a protein that occurs naturally in barley, wheat, and rye. People with celiac disease will experience an immediate immune system response when they consume gluten or products that contain gluten.

IBS can be triggered by gluten and different classes of food. Studies show that consumption of specific carbohydrates called FODMAPs (fermentable oligo-, di-, mono-saccharides, and polyols) can lead to IBS flare-ups. The condition can also be triggered by other factors, which include psychological stress.

It would help to know what triggers a flare-up when you have IBS or celiac disease. This helps prevent severe or debilitating symptoms.
