Hematuria(Blood in Urine): 10 Major Causes to Know

Seeing blood in your urine is a condition [1] known as hematuria. The blood in the urine may or may not be obvious to the naked eye. This condition is often due to underlying health conditions, but it can also have non-health-related causes, such as:

  • Kidney Stones
  • Enlarged Prostate
  • Prostatitis
  • Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Bladder Cancer
  • Vigorous exercises or workouts
  • Foods
  • Medications
  • Genetics

Types of Hematuria

You need a laboratory scan to determine the cause of blood in your urine. The medical practitioner will recommend a Computed Tomography (CT) scan, a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan, or an ultrasound examination. There are two types [2] of Hematuria namely; gross & microscopic hematuria.

Gross hematuria is when blood in the urine is visible to the naked eye. The color of the urine is usually red or the color of tea.

Microscopic hematuria is when blood in the urine is invisible to the naked eye and can only be seen under a microscope.
