Hematuria(Blood in Urine): 10 Major Causes to Know

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

UTIs are infections in any part of the urinary system: the kidney, urethra, or bladder. These infections are more common in women than in men because women have a shorter urethra than men which makes it easier for the bacteria to reach the organs. It is caused by the E. coli bacteria found in feces which enters into the urinary tract. Sexual activity is one of the leading causes of UTIs, other causes include irritating hygiene products, medication side effects, or an underlying illness.

Urinary tract infection can happen at any age, from childhood to adulthood. Studies have shown that up to sixty percent of women experience this infection during their lifetime. It can reoccur many times after the first infection, and the risk increases with age and sexual activity.

The common treatment for UTIs is antibiotics like amoxicillin. If the infection is mild, symptoms may alleviate without taking any drugs. But in more serious cases, antibiotics have proven to effective in treating UTIs. If left untreated in serious cases, symptoms may worsen and can become life-threatening. Painful urination, foul-smelling urine, and blood in the urine are common symptoms of a urinary tract infection.
