Medications

Hematuria caused by medication is when your urine has a tea or cola color. This condition is also a mild one that should correct itself after a few days. Blood thinners, including heparin, warfarin or aspirin-type medications, penicillins, sulfa-containing drugs, and cyclophosphamide can cause bloody urine.
Anticoagulants are drugs that prolong blood clotting time and overdosing on any of these drugs can cause hematuria. One of the side effects of laxatives is that they allow blood to leak into the urine.
Genetics
Some people have inherited disorders like polycystic kidney disease, hypercalciuria, and other hereditary urinary tract diseases. Hematuria caused by any of these inherited disorders is called familial hematuria. It can be passed on by one or both parents to the child or children. Symptoms are medically diagnosed by the onset of persistent bloody urine from childhood up until adulthood.
