The Symptoms of Kidney Infection (Pyelonephritis)

Symptoms of Polynephritis

The symptoms of infection often start to appear within one or two days after infection. [5]

Acute pyelonephritis is characterized by high body temperature, pain in the lumbar region, and changes in urinalysis. At first, chills, high fever, joint pain, and headache may appear. Simultaneously with this increase in temperature, pain in the lumbar region increases, often on one side. Sometimes, the development of pyelonephritis is preceded by some symptoms indicating the presence of obstructions in the urinary tract (pain during urination, discoloration of urine, and attacks of severe pain in the lumbar region).

Thus the common symptoms of acute pyelonephritis are;

  1. Fever: In acute pyelonephritis, the temperature suddenly rises to 39-40 ° C. Fever greater than 100.4 ° F (38.5 ° C) is typical. [6]
  2. Pain in the lumbar region on the affected side: (i.e., the abdomen, back, side, or groin) with pyelonephritis, lower back pain can be dull or sharp. Sometimes pain can be localized on one of the flanks of the abdominal cavity (on the side) and also transferred to the groin area (in the lower abdomen). With pyelonephritis, lower back pain worsens when bending forward. [7]
  3. Discoloration of urine: This often means that the urine is cloudy, dark, or bloody in appearance. With pyelonephritis, urine has a pungent fetid odor. Any blood in the urine can be a symptom of a serious health condition, even though it occurs only once.  Ignoring hematuria can lead to a worsening of serious conditions such as pyelonephritis in this case
  4. Nausea: This is a sensation or desire to vomit. It can be short-lived and harmless and can be prolonged in other cases. It is a significant symptom when prolonged. [8]

    Nausea symptoms are also difficult for people to explain. The signs of nausea are not painful but very unpleasant sensations that are felt in the stomach, upper abdomen, or back of the throat. This can also serve as a symptom of the manifestation of kidney infections.

  5. Vomiting: Vomiting, along with nausea, is a symptom of an underlying illness rather than a particular disease. It is also one of the many symptoms of pyelonephritis.
  6. Dysuria (A burning sensation with urination): Burning or painful urination is often referred to as dysuria. This pain can be caused by the bladder, urethra, or perineum. This burning sensation while urinating is also one of the common symptoms of pyelonephritis. Symptoms of cystitis, such as dysuria and hematuria, are typically present in women.
  7. Frequent or Urgent Urination: Frequent urination describes the need to urinate more often than normal. However, there is really no simple premise of “frequent” when it comes to how frequently you urinate. A critical factor in deciding whether you have frequent urination problems is to note if the need to urinate often creates challenges in your life. You may also try to note if you feel anxious when you’re not near the toilet. [9]

    Frequent urination describes the urgent need to get to the restroom immediately. It is, however, usually accompanied by painful urination or irritation in the case of pyelonephritis.

  8. Malaise and general weakness: Apart from all the listed symptoms above, pyelonephritis is often accompanied by the body’s general weakness. Loss of strength and body weakness can be an indication of kidney infection.

Other common symptoms are;

  1. uncontrollable shivering
  2. Chills
  3. diarrhea
  4. inability to urinate fully
  5. Decreased appetite
  6. Headache

In older patients and those with poor immune systems, kidney infection may be more serious and present these condition;

  • Confusion,
  • lethargy,
  • Quick heart rate,
  • Low blood pressure
  • Dehydration. [10]
