What are the Causes of Synovitis?

Synovitis usually occurs when there is inflammation or irritation in the synovium of joints. The major cause is unknown, but scientists believe that it may occur after a viral infection. It may affect one or both sides of a joint. If the inflammation only affects one joint, it is possible for it to spread to other joints.

What Does Synovitis Feel Like?

Synovitis is usually accompanied by severe or mild pain. You may also feel warmth, swelling, and stiffness that worsens in the morning. In some cases, the symptoms of synovitis may occur in different joints at different times. However, according to the Hospital for Special Surgery, your joint will hurt worse than it looks. That is, there may be no obvious swelling or sign of injury that’s causing joint pain when you have synovitis.
