What Causes Laryngitis?

Acute Laryngitis

This is a temporary form of the condition and can be easily treated. Some common causes of acute laryngitis include:

  • Viral infection
  • Vocal strain that occurs from overusing of voice via yelling
  • Bacterial infection

Chronic Laryngitis

This is a more serious condition and may be a signal of an underlying condition. Causes of chronic laryngitis include:

  • Excessive alcohol drinking
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) [2]
  • Irritants or Allergens
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Vocal cord paralysis
  • Chronic sinusitis [3]
