Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia: Facts to Know

What Category Does CMML Exist?

CMML is considered to be one of the myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasms. This is because, although CMML has its own distinct condition, it has similar features with two other conditions, they include:

  • Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPNs): This is a condition where you experience abnormal growths where your myeloid stem cells produce a larger number of WBCs, RBCs, or platelets. With MPNs these RBCs, WBCs, and platelets produced do not function as they usually MPNs can also progress to AML.
  • Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS): MDS is a general name for a group of related blood conditions. With MDS, your blood cells are atypical and don’t develop properly, leading to fewer healthy blood cells. A common complication of MDS is acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
