Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia: Facts to Know

Criteria Needed to Diagnose CMML

According to the World Health Organization, there are certain criteria that are highly recommended to diagnose CMML, they are:

  • Blast cells make up less than 20 percent of cells in the blood or bone marrow, with no signs of AML.
  • Monocytes levels should be as high as 1×10^9 cells per liter and they should have increased for at least three months, with monocytes making up more than 10 percent of white blood cells.
  • Rule out other specific conditions that share similar symptoms such as other MPNs, blood cancers that present with elevated levels of monocytes, and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).
