Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia: Facts to Know

Diagnosis for Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia

Symptoms of CMML can be similar to other conditions. So if you are experiencing symptoms, your doctor will perform tests on your blood and bone marrow to help make a diagnosis. There are several blood tests that your doctor can use to diagnose CMML. Some of which include:

  • A blood smear to evaluate how the blood cells look under the microscope.
  • Your doctor can also undergo a complete blood count to determine the number of monocytes and other blood cells under a microscope.
  • It is important to know what the specific condition is. Blood tests to help rule out other causes of elevated WBCs like infection or other health conditions.

Not just blood tests. A bone marrow aspiration and biopsy can also be used to run some test. They can be used to evaluate certain things such as:

  • The percentage of cells that are blasts.
  • The types, numbers and appearance of blood cells.
  • Whether or not it is related to a genetic trait.
  • The presence of specific markers on the surface of WBCs (immunophenotyping).
