Leukemia Stem Cell Transplantation

During

Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation

During the procedure, your frozen stem cells will be thawed and infused into your body through a major vein. Medication might be prescribed to you beforehand. Some people receive tandem transplants where they receive stem cells in multiple doses.

Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation

Minimum 2 days after completing pre-transplant treatment, you will receive your stem cell transplantation. The stem cell will be infused through a central venous catheter, this will involve inserting a tube into a major vein until it reaches the heart. This will allow the stem cell to travel through your bloodstream until it reaches your bone marrow.

After

This is the recovery period. It takes about 2 to 6 weeks for the stem cells to start producing a steady amount of blood. You might have to stay in the hospital for some weeks. Once you have been released from the hospital, you will still need to visit your doctor for daily or weekly exams. It will take a total of 6 to 12 months for your blood count to return to normal.

To prevent infection, your doctor might administer antiviral drugs, antibiotics, or anti-fungal medication. [3]
