Fatty Liver (Hepatic Steatosis): Most Common Signs and Symptoms

Edema

Edema is the swelling [6] of the hands and feet due to water retention in body tissues. Hepatic diseases reduce the flow of water through the liver; hence the pressure causes leakage in the blood vessels and water starts to accumulate in the veins, causing them to swell. The swelling becomes noticeable in the body parts that retain the fluids usually in the arms and feet.

Weight Loss

When there is liver damage, the body is unable to function properly. The body is filled with toxins which trigger nausea and vomiting and inhibits nutrient absorption. During this time, the body is losing fluids, storing up harmful substances, and is unable to regain lost strength. Frequent vomiting makes weight gain almost impossible and may lead to significant weight loss.
