Fatty Liver (Hepatic Steatosis): Most Common Signs and Symptoms

Itchy Skin (Pruritus)

Cirrhosis may cause intense itching all over the body known as pruritus. Liver diseases may cause pruritus – a reaction to high levels of bilirubin in the blood, causing jaundice. Bilirubin is a bile-like [11] substance produced during break down of red blood cells. Excess amounts of bilirubin may remain in the blood if the liver is unable to pass it to the digestive tract, and may cause skin irritation and intense itching.

Spider Nevus

Spider nevus is when the blood vessels are clustered together in a spider web manner and close to the skin [12] surface. It usually occurs as a reaction to hormonal imbalance due to liver damage – excess production of oestrogen (female hormones) and low production of testosterone (male hormones). It is also known as Spider angiomas.
