Pyogenic Liver Abscess and Endophthalmitis

The number of Americans who have experienced a pyogenic liver abscess as a result of K. pneumoniae has increased recently. People who suffer from diabetes, alcoholism, or who have taken antibiotics for an extended period of time are more likely to develop liver abscesses caused by K. pneumoniae.
Typical symptoms include:
- a fever
- upper right abdominal pain
- nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhea
K. pneumoniae can cause endophthalmitis if it gets into your bloodstream and spreads to your eyes. This is an infection that can result in blindness by inflaming the white part of your eye. Endophthalmitis of this kind is rare in western nations.
Possible symptoms include:
- eye pain
- redness, white, yellow, or cloudy discharge on the cornea
- photophobia
- fuzzy vision
