What Causes Pneumonia?

Healthcare-Acquired

Health care-acquired pneumonia is a recent type of nosocomial pneumonia contracted by patients staying at other healthcare facilities like kidney dialysis centers. It also includes infections that happen before hospital admission in patients with weak immune systems. These types of infections are usually serious because the bacteria may have grown resistant to medication. They include central line-associated bloodstream infections, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, and ventilator-associated pneumonia. This category covers patients that are in long-term care facilities exceeding two days and up to ninety days.

It has been described as the most serious form of pneumonia with more chronic symptoms than these of community-acquired infections. Treatment may last up to several months before full recovery.
