Aspiration

Aspiration pneumonia is an infection caused by inhaling food, drink, saliva, or vomit into the lungs. [4] This occurs when there’s an impairment of the palatal reflex that controls swallowing, caused by brain injuries or drugs and alcohol intoxication. Lungs become infected by the large number of substances that are entering from the mouth or stomach. Symptoms include high temperature, persistent coughing, and pus-filled lungs.
It is caused by bacteria that stay in the oral or nasal pharynx and has adverse effects in persons with weak immune systems. The lungs aren’t designed to accommodate foods and substances. Hence, these substances may cause an infection that causes your airways to expand. [5] Different factors determine the possibility of getting aspiration pneumonia such as illnesses, intoxication, surgeries, aging, brain disorders, or impaired swallowing reflex.
